Our Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center chiropractor Dr. Kent Carlomagno is not only an experienced and skilled chiropractor, but he also makes a big presence in our San Rafael local community and other communities in the nation.

For the second straight year, Dr. Kent Carlomagno attended the 2013 National Championship Air Races, which were located at RenoStead Airport on September 15th.

Here, Dr. Carlomagno put his chiropractic skills to good use when he had the honor of of adjusting his patient, friend, and fellow pilot colleague Thom Richard, who was suffering with cervical (neck) stress syndrome before the races as a result of barely landing in time before the close for unlimited pilot registration.

Our chiropractor, Dr. Kent Carlomagno, provided an adjustment to pilot Thom Richard in his cervical and thoracic area, providing the highly regarded pilot mental clarity, focus, and a release of the pain and tension he was experiencing.

As for the races, this was the 50th Annual National Championship Air Races. The event is held around the same time every year, providing races for over 200,000 spectators and aviation enthusiasts.

We are always happy to be apart of such events. To get an adjustment from the same chiropractor who adjusted an esteemed pilot, visit us in San Rafael, CA.

New Neuropathy Care

Many of our patients here at Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center suffer from neuropathy, which causes pain, numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in their feet and leg. It is the result of various types of medical conditions, including diabetes, certain medications, chemotherapy, and pinched nerves of the spine.

Chiropractic care is a highly successful treatment for neuropathy through our new neuropathy care program. Treatments are provided right here in our clinic, making it convenient for current and new patients to receive other types of care along with treating their neuropathy.

We provide multiple treatment options for new neuropathy care, including spinal compressive therapy, adjustments and manipulations, and massage to help with overall health and relief. Additionally, we have special devices cleared by the FDA to treat neuropathies, and use cold laser therapy as a treatment option.

Dr. Kent Carlomagno also believes proper nutrition and regular exercise help to further prevent future occurrences of the condition. A combination of treatments is used for the most effective results.

Worker's Compensation

Workers’ compensation injuries are any type of injury that happens while on the job. Examples include a delivery driver having an auto accident, an office worker suffering a repetitive motion injury (such as carpal tunnel syndrome), or a construction worker harming their hand with a power tool. Many injuries require more than just emergency medical treatment; they need chiropractic care for continued relief of pain and discomfort.

Chiropractic care here at Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center helps with the following types of workers’ compensation injuries and more:

1. Fallen objects.

2. Slipping, tripping or falling.

3. Physical altercations at work.

4. Repetitive motion injuries.

5. Vehicle accidents.

6. Machinery and electronic accidents.

7. Overexertion and exhaustion.

Dr. Kent Carlomagno begins care by identifying the issue and any underlying medical problems and addressing them together. In some cases, he figures out the chronic back pain is actually not just from overexertion at work, but because the spine is out of alignment. Through an adjustment and therapeutic massage, the entire body finds relief and the patient can return to work.

If you are in need of workers’ compensation care following an work-related accident or injury, visit us in San Rafael, CA.

Personal Injury

Here at Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center, we provide chiropractic care for many situations, including after a personal injury. A personal injury can occur from a variety of circumstances, ranging from a fall from a ladder or roof to chronic back or shoulder pain from moving “wrong” during sleep. Many of the injuries are similar to those experienced at work, except they are experienced outside of work.

With chiropractic care, we not only address the problem at hand, but work to improve the entire body. Our care focuses on the fact that all of the body’s systems are connected, so when one area is healed, the rest of the body soon follows suit. This is also why we like to perform adjustments for many of our patients, regardless of the injury. With an adjustment, we put the spine back into alignment, helping the entire body to improve.

We encourage patients to visit our practice not just to find relief for their injury, but to prevent more complications. Many times, ignoring a type of pain or trauma can worsen the condition, and cause more of the body to go into physical distress.

If you have had a personal accident, we urge you to visit us in San Rafael, CA for treatment from Dr. Kent Carlomagno.

Outreach

Outreach

Here at Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center, we believe providing excellent chiropractic care is our top priority.  However, our services go beyond adjustments and treatments. Our chiropractor, Dr. Kent Carlomagno, also offers outreach to the community by attending informational fairs and seminars. This helps us interact with our patients outside of the chiropractic office and continue to help them in a variety of ways.

One such fair is the Marin Senior Fair, where Dr. Carlomagno discussed the benefits of treatment for neuropathy and help visitors understand how chiropractic care can help them. This fair was held on October 23rd and included activities, lifestyle tips, health screenings, pneumonia and flu shots, and resources for seniors in our community.

We also visit the weekly Farmers Market downtown in San Rafael, CA to provide outreach in the form of educating our patients on the benefits of overall wellness and health through chiropractic treatments. This is a weekly event occurring every Thursday, where we talk with patients and discuss their conditions, in addition to offering positive solutions for their pain, discomfort, and wellness. To find out where Dr. Carlomagno will be next for outreach, call 415-721-7520.

Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral Neuropathy Diagnosis and Treatment

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects many of our patients here in San Rafael, CA. It causes the nerves to be compressed in the brain and spinal cord, which affects the entire body. With peripheral neuropathy, patients experience a lot of pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness of the area that is affected the most.

Peripheral Neuropathy is caused by a variety of things, including following:

  • Vitamin deficiency

  • Diabetes

  • Medications and drugs

  • Shingles

  • Kidney failure

  • Trauma

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Infections

  • Autoimmune diseases

Here at Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center, we diagnose peripheral neuropathy through a combination of examinations, blood tests, imaging and nerve function tests. If the patient indeed has this condition, we proceed with treatments, including adjustments and manipulations, as well as nerve stimulation. The exact type of treatment needed for peripheral neuropathy depends on the exact cause of it, whether it is an injury or medical condition that can be addressed.

Contact our office in San Rafael today to learn more about the diagnosis and treatment process of peripheral neuropathy.

Treatment of Running Syndromes

Treatment of Running Syndromes

Running syndromes occur in our patients who spend a lot of time running, whether for personal physical fitness or to train for an upcoming marathon. There are several types of running syndromes, including compartment syndrome and iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS). Both of these cause great pain to the patient, not just in their legs but their entire body. Dr. Kent Carlomagno offers patients chiropractic treatments to help with the pain and let them continue running.

Compartment syndrome occurs when there is extra pressure of muscles in the lower part of the leg. This leads to a cutoff of the blood supply and causes pain and swelling in the area. When patients come to see us who are known runners and have pain in the lower leg, in many instances they have compartment syndrome. Through therapeutic massage, we help return your leg muscles back to normal function.

ITBS is very common among runners as well, and considered an overuse injury. It happens when the ligaments in the thighs and shins become inflamed and too tight. With rest and proper chiropractic care, patients get relief from the pain from this condition and get help preventing it in the future. Call us at Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center at 415-721-7520 to discuss your options for treatment of running syndromes.

Physician, Heals Thyself

Physician Heals Thyself: Luke 4:23 proverb.

The body is a wonderful machine and heals itself at its own rate. As a chiropractor, I realize I’m a catalyst in the structural reintegration of the joints within the body, and am dedicated to the health, healing, and wellness of each and every patient.

When the body can transmit the complete and correct healing messages, and one least expects healing to occur, it is then when healing takes place.
When you do everything necessary to hasten the healing response and the problem persists, you become dismayed. However, on one fine morning, you get up and find that the problem (ailment, discomfort, or pain) is no longer there, we call this a miracle. In actuality, it is the innate wisdom of the body expressing itself in healing when we least expect it.

Whether mental, physical, or emotional, pain and discomfort has a way of challenging us like nothing else in life. We may feel like we’ve hit a brick wall at times. But perseverance, a belief in the human body, and knowing that the body will heal when ready, is the message I’d like to convey to each and every patient at Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center.

Yours in Good Health,

Dr. Kent G. Carlomagno

Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center Attendance at 50th Annual Reno Air Races

The 50th Annual National Championship Air Races were held on September 11 through September 15, 2013. The event, first organized by Bill Stead in the Nevada desert over 47 years ago, continues to be an annual event. The Reno Air Races event is held every September, and was only interrupted one year -- in 2001, when all United States aircraft were grounded following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Our own Dr. Kent Carlomagno attended the event. Again this year, he had the pleasure of adjusting/treating unlimited Air Race Pilot Thom Richard of the Precious Metal # 38 with chiropractic care.

“It is always an honor to see Thom and his crew working feverishy on their magnificent steed which ran both days marvelously and finished respectably in the Gold. Thom is a huge believer in chiropractic and has utilized it throughout his life with much success.”

For aviation enthusiasts in northern Nevada and around the world, the annual Reno air races have become a much-to-look-forward-to event. More than 200,000 spectators have been attracted to the event in the past ten years, as hundreds of aircraft fly high in the desert sky north of Reno. What’s more, over $80 million a year has been generated for the region’s economy, and Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center is proud to be a part of it.

The Reconnection: Heal Yourself, Heal Others

Here at Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center, we treat the cause of your pain or condition, and not just the symptoms. We also focus on a whole person healing for optimal health. With that in mind, we recommend that all of our patients read a profound book by Dr. Eric Pearl entitled “The Reconnection: Heal Yourself, Heal Others”.

In “The Reconnection: Heal Yourself, Heal Others”, Dr. Pearl ties healing together into a comprehensive healing approach in a very special way. He teaches the reader that one can facilitate extraordinary healing through harmony, balance, and alignment. While chiropractic care is still needed to enhance the healing process, Dr. Pearl provides a unique gift in tying healing, a higher power, and the human species together.

In writing his book, Dr. Pearl consulted with experts in medicine, science and spirituality, but drew on his own passion of healing to create a book that is a must-read for anyone interested in healing.

As one reviewer said about Dr. Pearl’s book: It’s “not just a book, but an experience”. That really sums it all up.

If you read “The Reconnection: Heal Yourself, Heal Others”, let us know what you think of it!

Supplements-- Do they take care of inadequate diet and exercise?

When used correctly, supplements can be a wonderful way to efficiently fill in the gaps of what your body needs, including extra nutrients and minerals that can be difficult to fully intake even with a very healthy diet.  However, if you’re relying on supplements as a substitute for a poor diet and inadequate exercise, you’re probably not going to get much out of them.  Supplements make a difference, but they are not magic pills. If you make the choice to give your body what it needs through activity and proper nutrition, supplements do a fantastic job of supplementing and supporting your efforts—not replacing them.  In the comments, share some of your supplement and health choice success stories.

Childhood Trauma – Trigger for poor lifestyle choices in the future?

When we experience a traumatic event or period, the effects can have a serious impact on our wellbeing, whether we realize it or not.  This can be especially true with childhood trauma, which can be difficult to fully identify, understand, and process--and as a result, move past.  Unhealed and hidden emotional and mental wounds can do just as much, if not more damage than the physical type. For many, past trauma is the first step in a reoccurring cycle of future trauma and poor choices throughout adulthood—including self-medication through substance abuse or overeating, escape through high-risk behavior, and lacking self-worth which amounts to neglect of one’s health and wellness.  Have you identified a childhood trauma or past event that once led you to poor lifestyle choices? Do you feel as though you’re free from that cycle? If you wish, share your thoughts in the comments.

Genetic Predisposition - Is it more of a tendency or a reliable predictor of disease?

If you’re genetically inclined towards a certain condition, does that mean it’s a life sentence? There are some genetic health factors that we simply cannot change and must live with, but many can be modified and controlled through a balance of lifestyle changes, personal management and practical treatment.  While many diseases are considered familial, so are habits and tendencies that affect our health.  Do you have an ailment or condition to which you are genetically predisposed? Take a step back and think hard about how much of that issue can be traced to family diet, activity levels, and other lifestyle trends and traditions. Conversely, how much of it is truly in the blood? Further, what have you done in your own life to manage and control your genetic conditions that differs from your family members and relatives? Share your thoughts in the comments.

What’s Your Athletic State?

As an athlete are you in a depleted or a replenished state? Do you feel strained and limited when you performed physically, or do you feel activated and rich with potential energy? If you feel you’ve gone from a replenished to depleted state much faster than in the past, there is a reason for that.  As we age, the ability for the energy chain molecules to replenish themselves retards. Our adrenal system is not so easily activated. So what do you do to regain your high energy potential? Have you assessed your need for adrenal support?

How Much Do You Care About Your Health?

How much do you care about your health? If we were to measure this as a percentage and compare it to the obesity rate here in America, for most people it would only be about 40%. In other words, less than half the population of American is consciously engaging with their health from a proactive, preventative approach. Most Americans look at health from a disease model perspective, as in taking a pill to treat their symptoms rather than maintaining a functional, wellness standpoint, which starts from the inside out. As a result of this attitude, many individuals expect their doctor to be responsible for their health and neglect the opportunity to take control. Relying upon a doctor to take care of your health for you places the burden on someone who cannot possibly be responsible in this matter. So I encourage you to ask yourself this: Are you participatory in caring for your health or reactionary?

Dr. Kent G. Carlomagno, D.C.

The Nervous System Connection

How would you describe your mental connection with all that surrounds you? Are you in tune with who and what you interact with in your environment? If you ever feel what many people call “mental exhaustion” it should surprise you to know that focus requires energy and intention, which can become depleted and replenished like other forms of energy. Since the amount energy you have at a given time can be considered finite, how you choose to distribute that energy plays a big role into what you gain in return. The more passionate or attracted you are to something the more likely you are to do well at it or succeed in learning it.  This may seem obvious, but if you’re not getting what you want out of life, or if you feel you’re not reaching your full potential for success, consider how you’re interacting with environment, what you’re focused on and how your nervous system not only connects across your body, it connects you to the outside world.

Mental Energy, Focus and Balance

In exploring the mind body connection, it’s important to assess your state of mental energy and focus.  As your read these words, pause for a moment and ask yourself:  Is your energy in high state, a centered and calm state, or low energy state? The answer is directly related to a very unique part of the brain known as reticular formation. The brain’s reticular formation in located in the brainstem in a group of nerve fibers.  This part of the nervous system has influence on positive and negative mental stimulus and deals with a number of functions that include motor function, awareness, attention, arousal and cardiac reflexes.

Vibration Therapy

Vibration Therapy

Since many of you may not be familiar with it, I wanted to talk a little bit about vibration therapy, and how it factors into healing and wellness.  Vibration therapy is carried out on a table or platform that produces a mechanical vibration which can be applied to the body as a whole.  Vibration therapy can also be administered through targeted, hand held instruments. The specifics of the vibration can be adjusted and will vary based on the delivery device, but the effects are meant to provide similar positive results.

When varying and consistent frequency of motion is introduced to the body, it promotes circulation and relaxation.  This is why many commercial massage devices offer adjustable vibration features.  Beyond the immediate comforting effects, vibration therapy can help stimulate and strengthen the nerves, muscles and joints, as well as break up scar tissue and combat the effects of certain ailments, including diabetic neuropathy, chronic fatigue and weakness, osteopenia and osteoporosis.

Vibration therapy is also beneficial for athletes and other individuals focused on weight lifting, strength training, weight loss, and improvement of balance and flexibility.

A complete overview of whole body vibration therapy is available through my practice website.  To find out if this approach is right for you and experience the benefits for yourself, call me at Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center.

Classic Chiropractic Adjustments – Why You Need Them and Why They Work

Classic Chiropractic Adjustments – Why You Need Them and Why They Work

With all of the exciting techniques and technologies that have surfaced in the chiropractic care realm, it’s easy for the foundation of functional wellness care to fall out of the spotlight. However, classics are classic for a reason, and the classic I’m talking about is the chiropractic spinal adjustment.

Chiropractic spinal adjustments work by getting to the center of our biological network—the nervous system.  When the nervous system falls out of alignment, you see a series of ailments begin to surface.  These ailments take shape as conditions and issues throughout the body, and their source isn’t always apparent—nor is the impact immediate.  That’s why many of my patients have struggled with conditions for years until they finally give chiropractic a try.  With a chiropractic adjustment, you’re getting to the underlying cause of an issue and allowing your body to do what it does naturally—which is sustain itself through healing.

Underlying spinal issues don’t always affect you the same way, and they don’t always surface in ways that are expected.  That’s a primary reason why classic chiropractic adjustments are essential to your regular health efforts: not only can they correct an illness; they can prevent you from developing them in the first place.

If it’s been a while since your last adjustment or if you’ve never had one and you’re not sure if and how chiropractic care can help you, I welcome your call and your visit to Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center.

Exciting and Effective as it is Gentle: A Look at Laser Light Therapy

Exciting and Effective as it is Gentle: A Look at Laser Light Therapy

It’s exciting to think of how far we’ve come with wellness technology.  In just the last few decades, chiropractic was commonly thought of as little more than spinal adjustments for neck pain and back pain.  While that’s an essential and effective part of what I do as a doctor of chiropractic, I’m always eager to learn about innovations in wellness therapies—and think: How can they benefit my patients?  One such technology that is emerging and growing across numerous industries is the use of lasers.  When it comes to addressing health conditions with lasers, it’s not just dentists and eye doctors that have used them to improve their services and treatment abilities.  Lasers also have a place in the chiropractic office, including Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center.  While laser therapies have been around for some time, and have earned a tried and trusted reputation in the process, more of my and my colleagues’ patients are becoming interested in how laser light therapies may be able to benefit them.  I wanted to address some of the common questions I receive about laser light therapy, and explain just how this unique type of treatment can make you feel great!

First, is laser light therapy safe?  For some people, they hear the term laser and they think intense power and heat which has no place near the human body.  But like any form of energy, the intensity of laser light can be modified and controlled as needed for certain purposes.  The laser that I use as part of my cold laser, or low level laser, therapy is effective though quite gentle.  It can be safely used on most parts of the body and on patients in various age-ranges and conditions.  One of the primary benefits of low level laser light therapy is that it’s very non-invasive, gentle and soothing, all while being effective to penetrate cellular tissues well below the surface of the patient’s skin.  It’s one of the most efficient and safest ways to soften tension spots and break up inflammation by doing little more using a light-emitting wand.

The way in which the laser light therapy is used is important.  Since a laser can be focused and controlled with ease, I’m able to provide targeted treatment to certain areas.  This therapy can be adjusted based on how you’re feeling and based upon the unique attributes and stages of your condition.  It’s highly versatile and enables me to give custom catered care, which is greatly appreciated by my patients.

Many who are curious about this therapy want to know what the low level laser feels like.  While the sensation may vary based on where the laser is used and your own sensitivities, many patients describe the feeling as soothing and warm.  Patients who come to see me for back and neck pain often state that it’s one of their favorite forms of treatment.  Additionally, my patients who are healing from various injuries or living with joint and inflammatory disorders have experienced great healing benefit from this form of treatment.

If  low level laser light therapy sounds like something you’d want to try, contact me at my chiropractic and longevity center in San Rafael, CA: 415-721-7520 or visit my website.  Many patients have been pleasantly surprised with how effective this treatment can be even though it’s so gentle.  I would be happy to discuss if and how laser light therapy can be used as a complimentary treatment to your current wellness program.

Running Syndromes and Targeted Treatment with Sports Chiropractic

Running Syndromes and Targeted Treatment with Sports Chiropractic

Running is a fantastic exercise for the body, mind and spirit.  As our feet hit and lift from the ground, each motion propels us towards a healthier, happier state of being.  Running can help us feel free, focused, clear and accomplished.  Regular running can add up to a plethora of benefits that include better heart heath, improved immune function, balance of cholesterol, disease prevention, decrease in stress and depression, and an overall greater sense of wellbeing and energy.  For all of these positive results of running, there are really few disadvantages.  The same skeletal and muscular movement that enables our bodies to benefit from running will occasionally need maintenance and care to prevent various strain and injury.  When such problems do occur, they result in a number of issues that I refer to as running syndromes.

Running syndromes occasionally slowdown many of my athletic patients.  They affect those individuals who run daily and consider themselves runners, first and foremost.  Running syndromes also affect other athletes and players who run as part of their training and fitness programs.  My primary goal is to help my patients prevent running syndromes in the first place, which is accomplished through regular sports chiropractic care to keep your spine, joints and muscles in peak performance condition and enable your body to absorb the motion that’s fundamental to athletic movement.  Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for me see a patient that needs care and assistance in recovering from a running syndrome. What are these syndromes? They are many, but the most common tend to be shin splints, snapping hip syndrome, pulled hamstrings, piriformis syndrome, severs syndrome, iliotibial band syndrome, Osgood-Schlatters disease, and cartilage breakdown-- which is known as a number of problems, including runner’s knee. Sprains, stress fractures and various forms of tendonitis are all fairly common as well.

These problems can easily keep runners from doing what they love for long periods of time.  Too often, conventional medicine treats the symptoms of these conditions, such as soreness and pain, but the affected area is never truly addressed.  This frequently means that athletes will reinjure the same region over and over again. Fortunately, the reinjure cycle can be stopped through chiropractic care.  Sports chiropractic differs from standard medicine in its targeted, corrective and preventative approach.  Through adjustments, joint and muscle focused therapies and recovery speeding treatments, like those that I offer at my practice, runners and other athletes can restore the harmony of their complex biological networks and achieve top performance.  I invite any runners and athletes out there, whether you’ve sustained an injury or you simply want to continue performing at your best, to come see how sports chiropractic can benefit you. Contact me directly at my chiropractic and longevity center in San Rafael, CA: 415-721-7520 or visit my website for more information.

And for my patients who want to take an active step towards health and longevity by starting a running or fitness program, come see me and I’ll be happy to help you prepare.

Yours in health,

Dr. Kent G. Carlomagno, D.C.
