What is Neuropathy?

At Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center, Dr. Kent Carlomagno is experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of neuropathy.  Neuropathy is typically short for peripheral neuropathy, and is defined as any damage to the nerves that carry messages from the brain and spinal cord to the extremities.  Most often affected are the hands and feet and the condition results in both numbness and pain in the extremities.

Patients describe neuropathic pain as a steady burning or ‘pins and needles’ sensation.  Depending on the specific nerves damaged, patients also experience numbness or a tingling sensation.  Several inherited diseases can cause neuropathy, as well as trauma and infection.  If you experience numbness or pain in your hands and feet and are unsure of the cause, please contact us for an assessment. Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center offers cold laser therapy and vibration therapy to help the symptoms of neuropathy. A chiropractor can tell you which treatment would benefit your condition the best.

Peripheral Neuropathy Diagnosis and Treatment

I’ve talked about peripheral neuropathy just a short while ago.  Since I frequently receive questions on my neuropathy program -- and since more and more people affected by this condition (small fiber) are now turning to chiropractic care for help-- I thought I should go into a few of the specifics when it comes to diagnosing and treating peripheral neuropathy with natural, drug-free treatments.  At Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center, I offer diagnostic tools and customized treatment programs that have helped many of my patients manage and prevent the advance of their peripheral neuropathy symptoms.  Here’s a brief overview of our peripheral neuropathy diagnosis and treatment program.

While some neuropathy patients of mine have already received a diagnosis when they come to see me, many others are only aware that they experience a sharp, burning and tingling pain.  This pain usually starts in the feet and runs up the patient’s body. These pains are often increased when subjected to touch and increases or decreases in temperature. When a patient describes this and other physical symptoms that are in line with the condition, I typically begin the diagnostic process. Diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy usually a series of specific test that show me more about the patient’s reflexes, nerves, posture, and coordination.  Nerve function tests and an ENFD (Epidermal Nerve Fiber Density) testing may be performed, especially if small fiber neuropathy is suspected.  This diagnostic process gives insight into the specific type of neuropathy affecting the patient.  Such specifics are easily overlooked in the large fiber neuropathy diagnosis, which makes it difficult to implement an effective treatment.

Once we determine the nature of the patient’s specific type of neuropathy, I’m able to create a neuropathy treatment program.  Individual programs are designed with three specific points in mind.  The first being the type of neuropathy to be treated, followed by the underlying biological and lifestyle factors that may have contributed to the presence of the neuropathy, and finally, the current condition and lifestyle needs of the patient.  One or a combination of resources I offer at Summit Chiropractic andLongevity Center is then utilized to help the patient overcome their pain and manage their condition—all without the use of drugs or invasive procedures.  Such resources include cold laser therapy and vibration, to help soothe and stimulate the patient’s internal tissues. Aid with dietary, lifestyle modification and fitness improvements may also be implemented to control and inhibit the spread of neuropathy’s symptoms to other parts of the body.

For any of my readers who want to learn more about how I naturally and effectively treat peripheral neuropathy with your overall wellness in mind, I invite your calls and questions. Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that manifests itself as pain, tingling, burning and numbness in your feet, legs and hands. While most common in diabetics, diabetes is only one of multiple causes of the condition. Other causes include thyroid disease, vitamin B issues, Lyme disease, kidney disease, anemia, alcoholism and some statin drugs. If you are suffering from this condition, we can help at Summit Chiropractic in San Rafael, CA. Providing peripheral neuropathy diagnosis and treatment, our chiropractor Dr. Kent Carlomagno can prevent nerve damage before it progresses too far.

Through our neuropathy program, patients who are suspected to have peripheral neuropathy can receive a skin biopsy, which is important for diagnosing neuropathy in small nerve fibers and also for following the progression of the patient’s condition during treatment. Once peripheral neuropathy has been diagnosed, Dr. Carlomagno can continue with treatment, which often includes cold laser therapy and vibration therapy.  In addition to alleviating the symptoms of the condition, chiropractic treatments for peripheral neuropathy can also prevent further nerve damage. If it is left untreated, neuropathy can lead to more serious complications that can require amputation.

Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral Neuropathy Diagnosis and Treatment

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects many of our patients here in San Rafael, CA. It causes the nerves to be compressed in the brain and spinal cord, which affects the entire body. With peripheral neuropathy, patients experience a lot of pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness of the area that is affected the most.

Peripheral Neuropathy is caused by a variety of things, including following:

  • Vitamin deficiency

  • Diabetes

  • Medications and drugs

  • Shingles

  • Kidney failure

  • Trauma

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Infections

  • Autoimmune diseases

Here at Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center, we diagnose peripheral neuropathy through a combination of examinations, blood tests, imaging and nerve function tests. If the patient indeed has this condition, we proceed with treatments, including adjustments and manipulations, as well as nerve stimulation. The exact type of treatment needed for peripheral neuropathy depends on the exact cause of it, whether it is an injury or medical condition that can be addressed.
