Sciatica Pain

Sciatica pain can be severe and even debilitating, however, there is treatment. At Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center of San Rafael, CA, we want our patients to be aware of what sciatica is, the different causes, and how it can be treated.

Sciatica pain comes from the sciatic nerve that runs from the lower back, through the hips, buttocks, and down each leg. Pain often radiates from the lower back all the way down the leg in a shooting pain. In the legs, the pain is most often felt in the back of the thigh and calf. The pain can be mild and achy or sharp and excruciating. Often patients feel a burning sensation. Sciatica pain is usually only felt on one side of the body. Symptoms that require immediate medical attention include loss of feeling in the leg, weakness of the leg, and loss of bowel or bladder function.

There are a few likely causes of sciatica pain. Most commonly, it is due to the nerve being pinched by a herniated disc or a bone spur. Occasionally, the pain can be due to nerve damage from another condition.

Sciatica usually resolves within a short amount of time using treatment, like physical therapy. Stretching the area, strengthening the surrounding muscles, and improving posture can relieve pain and keep it from returning. In other cases, steroid injections or surgery is recommended.

If you are experiencing shooting pain from your lower back through your leg, you may be suffering from sciatica pain. To schedule an appointment with Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center of San Rafael, CA, call us at (415) 721-7520 or visit our website, www.summitchiro.net

Parade of Lights Community Event

Dr. Kent G Carlomagno D.C of Summit Chiropractic did a community outreach event on Nov 27, 2015 entitled Parade of Lights of which he and a current patient performed complimentary spinal screenings, consultations and dissemination of info to potential new patients. This took place in San Rafael on Fourth Street from 12 Noon -8:15 P.M. This was a family event with many children that were in awe at the people in costumes, holiday carolers, snow saucering and vendors selling warm food. It was a frigid 38-40 degrees after the sun went down and everyone was wearing layers and kept moving briskly! “It is always a pleasure and honor to serve the Community in which I was raised and help many regain their health again thru our specialized services”. It is also exciting to rekindle old prior relationships and let others know we genuinely care and are there to serve our Marin County community.

Yours in Health;

Dr. Kent G Carlomagno D.C.

Magnesium Deficiency

Magnesium is a commonly overlooked mineral that many Americans are missing in their life. It is responsible for many of the important functions your body takes on, which is why at Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center in San Rafael, CA, we want to make sure our patients are getting enough of it.

Part of keeping your body running at peak performance is not just how you treat it on the outside, but on the inside, as well. Magnesium is responsible for over 300 chemical reactions within the body. These reactions are what keep our cardiovascular health, keep our energy levels up, our neuromuscular health stabile, and much more. Deficiencies can cause problems with muscles like spasms, weakness, and restless legs. People who do not have enough magnesium are also prone to abnormal heart rhythms, may have increased blood pressure, and increased risk of stroke and heart attack. In addition, depression, anxiety and sleeping problems may arise.

Magnesium is in many of the foods we already eat. Nuts like almonds, cashews, and peanuts are rich in the mineral. Baked potatoes with the skin, avocados, and yogurt are also good sources. Women should be getting about 310-320 mg of magnesium per day and men should be getting between 400 and 420 mg per day.

Proper nutrition, as well as whole-body care is necessary for a long, healthful life. To schedule an appointment with Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center in our San Rafael, CA office, give us a call at (415) 721-7520 or visit our website, www.summitchiro.net

Proper Stretching

Routine stretching allows your body to be flexible, resistant to injury, and faster at healing. At Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center, we are giving our patients in the San Rafael, CA area tips to make sure they are getting the most out of their stretching.

Stretching benefits the muscles and joints by improving flexibility. Flexibility not only provides a wider range of motion for better performance but it reduces the risk of injury. Stretching also helps blood flow reach your muscles.

To stretch correctly, you should be holding the pose for about thirty seconds. Holding the pose for less than twenty seconds will not yield much of a result, but you also do not want to stretch for too long and injure yourself. You want to stretch four to seven times per week to increase your flexibility. With each stretch, you will notice a wider range of motion. For stretching before an activity, there are different stretches to use. In some cases, a static (non-moving) stretch will be great; dynamic (moving) stretches will be great for others. Make sure you are using the right stretches to increase benefits and avoid injury.
