The Three Collisions in an Auto Accident

The Three Collisions in an Auto Accident

In the event of an auto collision, there are actually three collisions that take place. In order to understand what happens to the body in a collision, here at Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center in San Rafael, CA, we would like our patients to understand how these collisions happen.

A car crash can bring about some major injuries; while some of them are obvious, there are injuries that remain unseen. Helping you understand what happens will help you understand why it is so important to see a chiropractor soon after an accident.

The first collision happens when the car hits the object that is stopping its motion; whether it is another car, a tree, a pole, etc. This is the obvious collision. The damage is able to be seen on the outside of the car.

The second collision happens inside of the vehicle. This happens when a passenger hits the steering wheel, their seatbelt, the dashboard, the windshield, etc. This damage is able to be seen on the inside of the car and usually on the outside of the person’s body.

The third collision happens inside of a person’s body. When the body comes to a stop, the organs and structures inside of the body still move forward until they crash into something else in the body and stop. This could be the heart crashing into the ribcage, the brain crashing into the skull, or the spine jolting forward or backward in the body. There are many scenarios that could take place within the body. This injury may be unseen at first. A common unseen injury is whiplash. Whiplash causes elastic deformity of the soft tissue in the body and sets the stage for future degenerative changes of the spine that if left untreated become permanent and debilitating.

Seeing a chiropractor as soon as possible after an auto collision will ensure any unseen injuries get attention and care. To schedule an appointment with Summit Chiropractic and Longevity Center in San Rafael, call our office at(415) 721-7520 or visit our website, www.summitchiro.net
